A Life-Changing DiagnosisIn May 2025, Andy began experiencing pain in her left leg and sleeping more than usual. When her symptoms became concerning, Andy and her mom, Angelica, went to their local emergency room searching for answers.
That visit changed their lives forever.
Andy was diagnosed with childhood leukemia. At the time, she did not fully understand what the diagnosis meant, but for Angelica, the news was overwhelming. Neither of them knew what to expect or what the road ahead would look like.
Soon after her diagnosis, Andy began treatment at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital, where the family first learned about Four Diamonds and the support available to children facing pediatric cancer.
Relief Beyond Medical Care
For Angelica, one of the greatest sources of relief has been knowing that Four Diamonds covers Andy’s out-of-pocket medical expenses. As a single mother raising four daughters, the financial burden of cancer treatment could have been overwhelming.

Finding Joy During Treatment
Andy still has about a year and a half of treatment ahead of her. Over the last year, she has already endured many hospital stays, along with chemotherapy and medications that often leave her feeling nauseous and exhausted.
Even on the hardest days, Andy has not let cancer take away her childhood.
During long hospital stays, Andy fills her time with crafts and activities provided by child life specialists. One of her favorite people at the hospital is the Four Diamonds child life assistant, Tricia. She brings activities, laughter and companionship that Andy looks forward to every time she is admitted.
Andy has also connected with the Four Diamonds art therapist, who helps her process what she is experiencing through creative activities like working with clay and other art materials. Through art, Andy is able to express herself in ways that feel both fun and comforting.
The nurses caring for Andy have also made a lasting impact on her journey. Their kindness and encouragement have inspired Andy to dream about becoming a nurse herself one day.
A Trusted Voice and Advocate
One of the most meaningful sources of support for Andy’s family has been Daniel, the Four Diamonds translator.
Angelica primarily speaks Spanish, making communication during medical appointments especially challenging. Daniel helps bridge that gap by translating conversations between the family and Andy’s medical team.
For Andy and her family, Daniel is far more than a translator. He has become a trusted member of their support system. The family relies on him to help ask questions, explain medical information and ensure they fully understand every step of Andy’s care.
During some of their most difficult moments, Daniel has been beside them, and over time, they have built a strong friendship grounded in trust and respect.
Still the Same Strong and Lively Girl
Life today looks very different for Andy than it did a year ago. She now completes school entirely from home, and much of her time is spent attending treatments and recovering from hospital stays.
But through every challenge, Andy has remained the same bright and lively 11-year-old girl she was before her diagnosis.
Cancer may have changed many parts of Andy’s life, but it has not changed her spirit. Surrounded by the support of her family, medical team and Four Diamonds, Andy continues to face each day with strength, creativity and joy.
